The matchup between Southern University and Grambling State brings thousands of visitors to New Orleans' Superdome every Thanksgiving weekend.
When the parade rolls through Downtown, you know the weekend is officially underway.
Deborah Batiste attended Thursday's parade to support her grandson who was riding in Grambling's court.
“We usually come out here and support the parade every year," Batiste said.
The rivalry between the two HBCU programs dates back to 1932, but it was branded the 'Bayou Classic' in the 1970s.
Now in its 51st year, the rivalry is still going strong.
Jessica McDonnell is still in high school but realizes the importance of the weekend.
“It’s a big cultural thing for us. Like, I love Southern so much, the band, the Fabulous Dancing Dolls, everything," McDonnell said.
The competition goes beyond the gridiron. Grambling's 'World-Famed' Tiger Marching Band and Southern's Human Jukebox face off during Friday's Battle of the Bands.
“I went two years ago, and it was the best time ever. I really enjoyed myself," McDonnell said.
Those who attended Thursday's parade enjoyed a taste of the music and New Orleans culture.
“If you’re not from New Orleans or you’ve never done Mardi Gras then this just gives you a little taste of that," Bayou Classic Spokesperson, Candice Brock, said.
Brock said tickets are still available for Battle of the Bands and the football game on Saturday.
